Jeep Comanche Fuel Tanks

One of the great things about your Jeep Comanche is that it can take you anywhere a truck or other larger vehicle can, whether it is bumpy off-road terrain, snow-covered roads, or down to the corner store for a bottle of milk. However, over the course of your Comanche’s lifetime, all that rough-and-tumble behavior will start to wear down parts and in some cases cause irreparable injury. One of the most important pieces of your Comanche to take care of is the fuel tank for obvious reasons, and that holds true for not just the tank itself but also for everything else that makes the system work.

What are the important components of your fuel system?

Your Jeep Comanche runs on gas, and as such, it has a fuel tank that holds it until it’s needed by the engine and pumped out and sent through a filter and ultimately into your Jeep’s engine. There are a few important parts to be aware of that lend aid to this process, which include the following:

  • The fuel tank is the main gas-storage device on your Jeep Comanche. It can be made either of metal (aluminum or steel) or plastic (high-density polyethylene) and is designed to fit within the back end of your Jeep vehicle. The tank is designed to find a working balance between its size (i.e., how much fuel it can store) and its fuel efficiency. If the tank is too big, then it will use more fuel to drive the extra weight around.
  • The fuel filler cap helps prevent dirt and other debris from entering the tank of your Comanche. Relying on the outer door or sticking a rag into the filler neck is not enough to keep foreign materials from getting in.
  • The fuel filler neck is a hose made either from aluminum, which is soldered to the tank, or rubber, which is connected and held in place with hose clamps. This part connects the fuel tank to the mouth where the gas cap is located and allows you to fill the tank in your Jeep Comanche.
  • Fuel tank straps are long, thin pieces of steel that help secure the fuel tank and hold it in place. There are usually two of them running parallel to each other across the width of the tank and are bolted into the frame.
  • A skid plate is sometimes employed as an extra level of protection against ground-level obstacles that can damage or puncture the fuel tank on your Jeep Comanche. It is made from steel, and it fits over the underside of the tank on your Jeep.
What is the difference between OEM and aftermarket fuel tanks?

Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) fuel tanks are designed and manufactured by Jeep specifically for your Comanche, and the latter choice consists of tanks that come from third-party companies and offer a competitive alternative.
