Superchargers and Parts for Mazda Millenia

Superchargers are one of many types of kits produced by companies to alter the performance of your car. When selecting a kit for your Mazda, there are different features to consider. Here are some questions that may come up when making a selection.

What is a supercharger?

This component is an air compressor that increases the air pressure inside the engine of your vehicle. The air compressor is powered through a series of gears or belts attached to the crankshaft. The increased pressure provides additional oxygen for the engine to burn with the fuel.

What are some parts on a supercharged air compressor system?
  • Drive pulley: This component will have a belt or other mechanism attached to it and the crankshaft to provide power to the charger.
  • Compressor housing: This component is a set of tubing where cool air passes through before it’s compressed.
  • Intercooler: This component works in conjunction with a water pump and piping to move heat away from the charger.
  • Gaskets: These components work to seal the space between the different parts to prevent air from escaping.
What is the difference between supercharged air compressors and turbochargers?

Both components work similarly to compress the airflow in the engine to provide additional oxygen for combustion. A turbocharger is connected to the exhaust system and uses a turbine to spin the air compressor. The size of the turbocharger will determine the power of the turbocharger.

What types of kits are available?
  • Roots superchargers: This type will be mounted on the top of the motor and uses a pair of lobes that spin to compress the air before it enters the intake manifold. Roots superchargers will also have an intercooler attached to the design to handle heat dissipation.
  • Centrifugal supercharger: This type will be mounted to the front of the engine and uses a combination of a diffuser and impeller to compress the air.
  • Twin-screw charger: This style works similarly to roots superchargers but uses a pair of screws instead of the lobes. This style typically doesn’t use an intercooler.
How do you select a supercharger?
  • Review your car’s information: You will want to know the make, model, and model year of your automobile to find compatible systems. You can also use the VIN to search for this information as well.
  • Select a style: The style will have an affect on where the charger can be installed along with the specifications and requirements. Styles will be divided by positive displacement and dynamic options.
  • Select a brand: If you prefer to use OEM parts you will want to select those made by Mazda. There are also several aftermarket and unbranded options available.
  • Select a connection type: The charger will draw energy from the crankshaft, but you can select from the drive mechanism such as a gear, shaft, chain, or belt.
