How to Keep the Northbridge Chipset Cool in Your Computer with a Memory Cooking Heatsink

Heatsinks are devices that keep components inside of your computer cool. They prevent overheating and the resulting data loss and system failures. Here’s the information you need to install the right memory cooling heatsink for Northbridge chipsets.

What is a chipset and how is it identified?

The term chipset refers to the electronic components found in a computer’s data flow management system. This system manages the transmission of data between the processor, memory, and peripherals and is usually located on the motherboard. Chipsets are designed to work with a specific group of microprocessors. To determine what type you have, go to your device manager and look at the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers to see the brand your computer uses.

What is a heatsink?

There are two types of heatsinks. One is the active heatsink that uses either a fan or liquid for cooling. The other type, known as a passive heatsink, has no mechanical parts. It moves heat across radiator-like fins supported by a thermal paste to help with heat conductivity. The CPU and video cards mainly use cooling fans. Heatsinks are also used with hard drives, expansion cards, memory, and north and south bridges.

Whats computer memory and why must it be kept cool?

Computer memory is a device that stores data either permanently or temporarily. Memory cards or modules connect to a memory slot on the motherboard. Random access memory, or RAM, stores data on an integrated circuit and makes it available for use by the operating system, hardware, and software in your computer system. Data is temporarily stored in RAM until it is sent to a permanent memory location like the hard drive. If the computer loses power, any information stored in RAM will be lost. If the RAM or CPU overheat, your system may shutdown or reboot and lose data. Using a heat spreader style of sink can prevent overheating at the RAM.

How do you know if your heatsink is failing?

Follow these steps to diagnose and replace the Northbridge heatsink in your computer. Unusual noise coming from the fans in your computer may signify a failing heatsink. Check the hardware monitor in the BIOS to determine if your Northbridge cooler is failing and needs replacing.

  • Install: You can install a Northbridge chip cooler using either mounting clips or thermal tape.
  • Attach: If your motherboard doesn’t have holes, the double-sided tape can be used because it has heat conducting properties.
  • Secure the heatsink: When there are holes, use mounting clips and thermal paste to secure the heatsink.
