Play Portable PC Games on the Go With the NVIDIA Shield Tablet

The NVIDIA Shield, also known as the Shield Tablet K1, is a portable gaming tablet, meaning you don't have to be sitting in front of your home computer to immerse yourself in the games you love. The device combines elements from a traditional tablet and a portable gaming system. It allows you to play Android games or stream from the GeForce NOW cloud gaming service from almost anywhere.

How many different versions of the tablet are available?

NVIDIA introduced two different versions of the device at launch: a Wi-Fi-only version with 16GB of internal storage space and a 4G LTE version with 32GB of space. The latter version can access the internet from a wireless cellular network. NVIDIA relaunched the Android tablet in 2015 under the name Shield K1, although it is mostly identical to the 16GB Wi-Fi-only version. All these versions share a similar set of features, including a Tegra K1 chip, 2GB of RAM, front and rear 5MP cameras, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity, a GPS system, a microUSB port, and mini-HDMI. Other features include a microphone, an audio jack, and a microSD card slot. The device is also equipped with two front-facing speakers and an 8-inch multi-touch LCD display with a resolution of 1920 by 1200 pixels. The system is capable of playing full high-definition games, but it can output video to a television at 4K resolution. It has a slot for a stylus as well.

What operating system does the Shield use?

The launch version of the system runs on the Android 5.0 Lollipop operating system. Since its launch, the system is frequently updated to run on the latest version of Android at the time. If you are running an earlier version of Android, then you can still update the tablet yourself to take advantage of the updated features. Thanks to its Android functionality, the device is not only designed to play games, but it can double as an actual tablet as well. It supports Netflix, Hulu, and YouTube streaming services. It also works with the following apps and services:

  • Plex: A client-server media player system that helps to systemically organize your media
  • Google Play: A digital distribution service
  • Crackle: A digital streaming service from Sony
  • Kodi: An open-source media player
  • Pandora: A music streaming service
  • Sling Television: An internet television streaming service

Some of these services may require a subscription. In addition, the system lets you purchase thousands of games, including "Hearthstone," "Fallout Shelter," "Game of Thrones," "Minecraft," and "Need for Speed."

How many controllers can connect with the Shield?

The system can connect with up to four wireless controllers at a single time for local multiplayer games. The controller is its own separate unit, unconnected to the rest of the screen. However, the controllers are sold separately.
