Honda CR-V Window Motors & Parts

As with any motor-driven part on your Honda vehicle, window motors for your power windows may show signs of wear over time and require replacement. Because power windows are designed to be solely power operated at the push of a button without a hand crank to move them up or down, an impaired window motor makes it impossible to change the windows position. Understanding what parts and motors are necessary for your Honda CR-V can help you maintain the power system for your cars windows.

What are the different parts of a power window motor?

When dealing with an inoperable power window on your Honda CR-V, it is important to understand the different parts that function together as a whole to move your window up and down. These include:

  • Control switch - On the drivers side, this button is wired to control not just the drivers window but to allow the driver to control all the windows in the vehicle. There is also a control switch on the passenger windows that is wired just for the individual passenger windows.
  • Motor - Each power window is equipped with its own individual motor that, when engaged, powers the window regulator. The motor is powered by the electrical system of your car.
  • Regulator - This is the gear system that is moved by the motor. As the gears turn, the regulator can move the window up and down.
  • Fuse - Part of the electrical system of your car, the control switch, the motor, and the regulator are all wired to a fuse that powers the system.
Which part of your power window needs replacing?

Once you understand what the different parts are that work together to open or close the power windows in your CR-V, you can check and test each part to isolate where the problem is. This will help you order the correct replacement part and potentially save you time, money, and frustration so you can just enjoy your time behind the wheel. Common problems with power windows and what to check include:

  • All the power windows will not work - If none of the windows will work, either from their individual control switches or from the master switch on the drivers side, you may have a blown fuse. Replace the correct fuse by checking your owners manual for which fuse feeds the power window system, turn on your engine, and try again.
  • Only some of the windows will not work - In this case, the individual wiring to the control switches for those windows may be in need of repair. Using a voltmeter, check the wires to see if they are drawing power. If they are drawing power, the control switch itself may need replacement.
  • Slow-moving windows - If the windows do engage and work, albeit slowly, you may not have a mechanical or electrical issue. Instead, check the window gaskets for any accumulation of dirt or grime and lubricate the gaskets and seals to see if the windows move more smoothly and at the proper speed.
  • Whining or grinding sounds - The presence of whining or rattling sounds when you try to use your power windows is a good clue that there may be an issue with the motor itself. Checking, repairing, or replacing the motor will require removal of the door panel.
