Motorcycle Ignition Coils for the Harley-Davidson Road King

Harley-Davidson began producing the Road King in 1994. The Road King was originally produced with a carburetor system by Harley-Davidson, but has seen many fuel delivery changes since then. These changes in fuel delivery have dictated changes in ignition coil capacity.

What does an ignition coil do?

All motorcycle engines require an ignition coil, including the Harley-Davidson Road King. The ignition gap on a spark-plug in a Harley-Davidson Road King requires a voltage of over 5,000 volts. The power needed to drive a Road King generates in the ignition coil where two fields of copper windings surrounding a steel core increase voltage.

What kinds of ignition coils are there for Road Kings?

For the Harley-Davidson Road King, there are three kinds of ignition coils to be considered.

  • The Road King uses a stock ignition coil produced by Harley-Davidson designers for a Touring bike like the Road King. The stock coil provides an adequate amount of power to drive Harley-Davidson carburetor models. Usually, this will be just enough to provide a smooth-running engine.
  • Harley Davidson also offers high-performance ignition coils. These coils provided a steady power source well beyond that required to run a Road King. The Harley-Davidson high-performance ignition coil doubles the voltage produced by a stock coil.
  • The third Harley-Davidson coil is the stick. These coils are a product used by Harley-Davidson in fuel injected engines.
What kind of ignition coil is recommended for Road Kings?

Selecting your replacement ignition coil is both simple and complex. You can simply look up the Harley-Davidson recommended coil in the owner’s manual. Or, if you are a rider that wishes to upgrade your Road King to a Custom Touring vehicle, then you may consider either the high-performance or the stick ignition coils. The high-performance coil is only used on carburetor systems as the added spark will overheat a fuel-injected chamber and housing. The stick is designed for use on a fuel-injected system. Look in your owner’s manual for the voltage required by your fuel-injection system to determine the voltage needed for a smooth riding motorcycle.

When should a Road King ignition coil be replaced?

Remember, the ignition coil continuously produces the spark necessary to generate the continuous fire driving your motorcycle. A worn ignition coil will often require more grinding during motorcycle starting. More frequently, however, the main symptom you will notice in your motorcycle is a reduction in power between certain rpms. Curiously, the first hesitations will occur between 1,000 and 4,000 rpms or when an extra load is placed on your Harley, such as a steep uphill climb. A hesitation power delivery at these moments points to the need for a new ignition coil.
