Lice Treatment

Head lice are parasites that spread quickly throughout households and schools. One louse can turn into a huge problem as it lays eggs and moves from person to person through personal contact or shared clothing or combs. With head lice treatment, it is essential to remove every louse and take prevention measures to avoid a recurrence.

How is head lice treated? Since just one louse can start an infestation, early and effective treatment is essential. The treatment of head lice involves just three steps and requires shampoo and a comb.

  • Wash hair with shampoo medication to kill the head lice and eggs. Afterward, rinse per package instructions.
    • Over-the-counter shampoos include products containing pyrethrin and permethrin. Combined with combing, both pyrethrin and permethrin are equally effective in the treatment of head lice.
    • Prescription medication shampoos consist of lindane, malathion, and ivermectin.
    • Natural products such as tea tree oil are popular in all-natural households.
  • Slowly and thoroughly comb the hair to physically remove the dead lice and their eggs.
    • Lice combs come in different styles but all have very fine prongs that remove the nits while combing.
  • In the following weeks, while combing hair, check the scalp to ensure no return of even a single louse.

How do you identify head lice? If a child has head itchiness or if there is a known outbreak at school or day care, it is important to check for lice.

  • Part the hair using a precise, narrow-toothed comb.
  • With a flashlight, examine the scalp for any evidence of a lice infestation.
    • Live lice: Each louse resembles a sesame seed walking around on the scalp.
    • Nits, or lice eggs: These are small seed-like objects that look stuck to specific hairs.
  • Check in various places on the child's head, and be careful not to mistake a nit or louse for dirt.

Can mayo kill head lice? Mayo is an effective treatment for live lice as it suffocates each louse. This treatment consists of a bedtime application followed by a morning rinse. While this process has no side effects and is an alternative to prescription shampoos, it does not treat the nits.

What is RID lice treatment? RID has a collection of comprehensive lice treatment and prevention products that are safe for children. This treatment system involves three steps.

  • Wash the child's head. The active ingredient in RID shampoo is pyrethrin, which kills every live louse and the nits.
  • Removing lice with a comb. The RID lice comb and Comb-Out Spray help parents methodically brush away all dead lice and lice eggs from the child's scalp to complete treatment.
  • Home treatment. Applying RID Home Lice, Bedbug, and Dust Mite Spray helps prevent future head lice infestations in the household.

What is Sklice used for? Sklice Lotion is a prescription head lice treatment that contains ivermectin. This product is safe for any child older than 6 months and does not usually require an additional treatment or tedious nit combing.
