What is Computer Memory?
Computer memory refers to the information that stores in a computer for immediate use and is otherwise known as Random-Access Memory (RAM). The higher the number of memory, the more activity a computer can handle at once. Today, new computers and laptops have 4 GB, 8 GB, or 16 GB of RAM, but older computers will have a lot less.
Is 256MB RAM Suitable for My PC?
A new computer from the last decade will most definitely require a higher RAM than 256 MB, but there are some computers and programs still around that you can use this for.
- Windows 98: Windows 98 runs perfectly with 256 MB so if you are still using an old computer with this program, it is all you need. It has the ideal efficiency and higher or lower RAM can cause issues.
- Windows XP: Computers that sold with Windows XP installed often came with 256 MB RAM and were able to run basic computing processes without any issues.
What is DIMM?

- Dual In-line Memory Module: DIMM is a double SIMM (single in-line memory module). It has either one or several RAM chips on a small circuit board that connects to the motherboard with pins.
- Pins: Original DIMMs had a 168-pin connector which supports a 64-bit data transfer whereas a SIMM has a 32 data bit and a 72-pin connector. Newer DIMMs attach to the motherboard with a 288-pin connector and are based on fourth generation SDRAM chips.
- SO-DIMM: Standard DIMMs come as a rectangular stick about 5.5" in length, but you can also find small outline dual-line memory modules (SO-DIMM) that are about half that length. Both are commonly around 1.2 inches tall and you can also find smaller formats.
