Vroom Into the Exciting World of Indian Motorcycles

If you love riding or working on motorcycles, then you may want to find new or old Indian motorcycles for sale on eBay.

The first Indian motorcycle was called the Camelback. It had pedals and a chain, like bicycles. Mounted to the front downtube was a cylinder filled with batteries. Under the small frame was a muffler. The throttle and the ignition were located near the batteries.

In the 1920s, the brand made several models that collectors of used Indian motorcycles often look for, including:

• Scout - This low-slung semi-monocoque Indian motorcycle had a 37-cubic-inch V-twin engine until 1928 when Indian replaced it with a 45-cubic-inch engine. See the manufacturer site for details.
• Chief - Produced from 1922 until 1928, the first Indian Chief motorcycles featured a 61-cubic-inch four-stroke V-twin engine. Workers bolted gearbox to the engine casings.
• Big Chief - Produced from 1923 until 1953, this Indian motorcycle featured a 74-cubic-inch V-twin engine. Executives marketed this motorcycle for use with a sidecar.
• Model L Indian Prince - Manufactured from 1925 to 1928, Indian designed this single-cylinder motorcycle for beginner riders. During the first year, workers attached the gearbox to the engine, and this motorcycle had a wedge-shaped fuel tank. Starting in 1926, this motorcycle's gearbox became separate, and workers redesigned the fuel tank. This bike had no front brake until 1928.
• 101 Scout - Workers made this redesigned Scout from 1928 to 1931. You can find this bike with a 45-cubic-inch or a 37-cubic-inch V-twin engine.

Besides the Scout and the 101 Scout, you may be able to find other versions of Scout Indian motorcycles when shopping for used Indian motorcycles including:

• Standard Scout - Designers gave the Scout a heavier frame in 1932. The first year of this motorcycle's production was the last to use the total-loss oiling system. Workers put streamline mudguards and used a belt-driven Autolite dynamo to provide power for a light and a horn.
• Pony Scout - This Indian motorcycle product had a 30.50-cubic-inch engine displacement was offered by the company as a low-cost option during the Great Depression.
• Sport Scout - This bike had a two-piece frame, improved light frame, girder forks, improved carburetor, and an alloy cylinder head. A small redesign added about 15 pounds to this motorcycle in 1940, which was the first time a Sport motorcycle had a full skirt.
• 648 Sport Scout - These racing motorcycles had a triangular internal cavity near the lower rear portion of the crankcase and a shallow case for the timing gears. Otherwise, they look very similar to the Sport Scout.
