A Short, Pithy Introduction to Dodge Car and Truck Air Intake Systems

The air intake, also called a cold air intake, draws cool air into a vehicle’s internal combustion engine to lower engine temperature. This helps the engine run better and prevents bearings and parts wear and tear. Air intake systems increase performance of electronic fuel injection engines.

From what materials can an air intake be made?

Manufacturers of these systems create various styles of a variety of materials, including composite materials like carbon fiber, fiberglass and Kevlar, metal, plastic, and silicone rubber. Vehicles made in the mid-1970s through the mid-1990s come with thermostatic air intake systems installed and any of these materials may have been used. These factory installed systems can be replaced with aftermarket systems.

The difference between factory-installed and aftermarket systems

The older model cars that have the factory installed system receive warm air through it when the engine gets cold and cold air to cool a warm engine. Current vehicles come with an unregulated cold air intake. Aftermarket manufacturers attempt to increase engine performance and efficiency by providing a cold air intake that:

  • Reduces air resistance by creating turbulence
  • Removes muffling devices from the design to provide a direct route to the air intake
  • Makes the intake length shorter
  • Creates a ram-air effect in the intake duct
What is the function of the Dodge DPF delete kit?

Some cold air intake systems allow you to tweak engine performance. One of these is the Dodge diesel particulate filter (DPF) delete kit which lets you delete the diesel particulate filter on a Dodge Cummins 6.7L truck for model years 2007 to 2012. The kits can result in horsepower gains, better throttle response and increased fuel economy. This results in increased engine performance. Some DPF delete kits also enable deletion of the vehicle’s multiple catalytic converters (CAT) and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). You can find on eBay the 2008 Dodge diesel DPF delete kit, 2010 Dodge Cummins DPF delete kit and 2013 Dodge DPF delete kit.

In some cases, a delete kit such as the 2008 Dodge 6.7 DPF delete kit cannot do the job by itself. In these situations, combine its use with a Raceme or Raceme ultra-tuner. These tuners are designed to allow a full deletion of engine data on a 6.7 Cummins. In most cases, you’ll need both to enhance a 6.7 Cummins EGR delete kit.

How do you choose an air intake kit for a vehicle?

Your choice of kit depends on your experience working on vehicles and your driving needs. Choose a standard air intake kit if you need to install it yourself and you have little experience; you need the least expensive upgrade and you’ll need to drive in mud or high water. Choose a cold air intake kit if you need really cold, dense airflow and to maximize your power gains. These require more installation experience.

You’ll also need to determine the materials from which you want the air intake comprised. Typical designs use plastic, composite, metal, or aluminum intake tubes. Metal tubes can run a little hotter than plastic ones. Plastic costs less and blends well with the engine compartment. Metal maximizes style. While a few universal designs exist, most are direct-fit systems, meaning that they’re designed specifically for a certain model of car or truck. A direct-fit design comes manufacturer pre-tuned to work with the engine’s computer application.
