Choosing Cables and Adapters for Your Devices

The past few decades have seen the world change faster than it ever has before. The rise of digital devices and other electronics has led to a technological revolution, and almost everyone now uses some sort of device as part of their everyday life. For these devices to work, you need to make sure that you have the right collection of cables, adapters, and connectors for charging and syncing.

What Should I Think About When Looking for a New DisplayPort Cable?

If you aren't technologically minded, then one cable may just seem like any other cable, and this coupled with the overwhelming number of options can lead to choosing cables that don't work for your device. DisplayPort (DP) cables have become quite common in the modern world, as they are compatible with most other interfaces. Consider the following when choosing new cables:

  • Do you need adapters? If you want to connect something with a different interface (like HDMI or VGA) to a DisplayPort cable, then you will probably need some sort of plug adapter.
  • What sort of resolution do you need? DisplayPort cabling provides relatively high resolution input and is comparable to HDMI cabling. It generally offers higher resolutions, but it remains compatible with VGA and DVI.
  • Cable specifications - You also need to think about a couple of other points. Most importantly, you need to make sure that your new cable is long enough to connect your devices. If you need a greater cable length, you may need to consider getting one or more connectors.

What Is Meant by the Terms Male and Female with Reference to Cables?

When researching or talking about cables (including DisplayPort cables) and other electronic connectivity gear, you may hear the terms "male" and "female." These are actually ways of describing the cables and their connectivity, as follows:

  • Male - Male cables are those that plug into something else. They usually have some sort of pins or another method of securing themselves inside a plug socket.
  • Female - Cables with female connectivity are designed to have something plug into them. They usually have a distinctly shaped plug hole that takes one type of male plug.
  • Note that not all cables are male or female. Some can have other types of connectivity, especially those that aren't portable or those that hardwire into a device.
