Hyundai Sonata Air Bag Parts

Airbags are one of the most important safety features of your Hyundai Sonata vehicle. They help to slow your momentum as you are thrust forward in the event of an auto collision, thus minimizing the risk of serious injury. It is useful to understand how the different parts of an airbag work in case they have been deployed or are starting to malfunction and you need to replace them.

How do Hyundai Sonata airbags work?

The airbags in your Sonata are designed to slow your forward momentum as quickly and evenly as possible. They need to do this in the space of a single second, and there are three important parts that help them accomplish this feat.

  • The physical bag in your Hyundai Sonata is constructed from a thin nylon material that compactly folds into the steering wheel, dashboard, seat, or door of your Sonata. Once it is inflated, this is the part of the system that will make contact with your body in an effort to cushion you during an impact event.
  • A specialized crash sensor is installed in the Hyundais airbag. This is the mechanism that sends a signal telling the nylon bag to inflate if you were unable to avoid impact. Most Hyundai Sonata sensors are set to tell the airbags to inflate when they detect an impact that is more or less equal to that of a person running into a wall at a minimum of 10 miles per hour. When a significant shift in mass occurs, the sensor in the Sonatas airbag receives information from an accelerometer, telling it to trigger the inflation system.
  • Chemicals inside your Hyundais inflation system react with one another to produce a nitrogen compound that allows the bag to inflate.
  • Although these are the primary Hyundai Sonata parts that control the airbag, you may wish to purchase additional replacement parts such as a clock spring, additional impact sensors, or diagnostic modules.
  • You can purchase complete Hyundai Sonata airbag kits, including those made for the steering wheel, front passenger side, or right and left roof modules.
How do you install Hyundai Sonata airbags?

Once youve purchased new airbags for any area of your Sonata, you can install them by following a few guidelines. You can replace most airbags in your Hyundai the same way, regardless of their position in the vehicle, although you will unscrew different parts depending on which unit you are replacing.

  • You should make sure your Hyundai Sonata engine has been turned off for at least 10 minutes before you start the installation process. This window of time ensures the car has had enough time to discharge the airbags capacitor.
  • Locate and replace the damaged clock spring that plugs into the airbag on the drivers side of your Sonata.
  • Unscrew the steering column and pull out the old airbag, disconnecting it from the wires at the back.
  • Attach the new airbag to those same wires and reattach the steering column.
  • Reattach your Hyundais negative cable and reactivate the fuses.
