Mini Cooper A/C Compressor Clutch
The air conditioning system in a vehicle has several parts, but problems can usually still be diagnosed rather simply. One of the most important parts is the A/C compressor. When the compressor clutch isnt working, the car cannot be properly cooled by the air conditioning system.
What is the purpose of the A/C clutch relay?Similar to the other electrical systems in a car, the A/C system and compressor clutch use an electrical relay for power. The relay is operated by a small electric current that can regulate a much larger current by turning it on or off. The A/C compressor and clutch are powered in this way by the A/C clutch or compressor relay.
Why does my A/C Compressor make noise?The compressor and associated parts, such as the A/C clutch, will make distinctive noises when they are in need of attention. These noises are relatively simple to diagnose, but some of the fixes are more complicated than a simple repair or replacement job. The reasons for some of the noises you might hear are explained below:
- Clanking or rattling: These noises are made when the compressor motor comes loose and is moving around inside the sealed compressor can.
- Hissing or bubbling: These sounds can indicate a serious refrigerant leak in the compressor.
- Rattling or humming: The fan will need to be cleaned.
Like all wear and tear items on a vehicle, the clutch on a Mini Cooper is no exception. Traffic conditions, length of daily commute, and driving habits can all contribute to the life span of the clutch on a Mini. Some parts, such as a pulley or flywheel can be repaired simply. Other wear and tear parts, like the transmission or engine, will be more expensive.
What are some symptoms of transmission problems in a Mini Cooper?Several common transmission issues should not be ignored. Problems with the transmission can quickly make a vehicle completely useless. If transmission fluid needs to be frequently replaced or if the transmission is slipping, whining or clunking, these symptoms will require immediate attention. Other common symptoms of a faulty transmission include the following:
- Change in or lack of response
- Burning smell
- Grinding gears
- Dashboard warning light
- Noisy in neutral
The A/C refrigeration system consists of several parts that work together. In addition to the evaporator, compressor, and condenser, there are devices that monitor the refrigeration system called pressure transducers. These transducers identify faults that can damage the A/C system.
