Use 3M Thermal Tape for Your Thermal Computer Needs

Many people like to create and build their own computers from the ground up by selecting their own materials and upgrades. It is important to make sure that you have all the essential products and pieces when building a computer. You can use the conductive tape 3M manufactures to cool your processor and keep your newly built computer safe.

What is thermal tape?

This tape is a type of thermally conductive tape used for electronic components and heat sinks. Generally, conductive adhesive transfer tape is used to connect integrated circuits to heat sinks when there are no other other ways to mount the pieces together. Some molding pieces may come with the conductive adhesive transfer tape already attached. However, if you are building your own computer using electronic components from a distributor, you will have to purchase the tape separately.

What is a heat sink or heat spreaders?

A heat sink is a device used to absorb excessive amounts of heat. A heat sink will help to keep your computer processor cool and prevent overheating. A heat spreader moves heat between heat sources. Both heat sinks and heat spreaders keep heat-generating components cool.

What is the difference between thermal tape and glue?

Generally, this tape is an added convenience when building your own PC because you don't have to measure the amount of glue and spread. Simply peel off the tape and place it in your desired location. Ultimately, it comes down to a matter of preference for which style of adhesive you want to use on your computer build. This tape typically will heat up when in use and then cool off again when not in use.

Does this tape come in different shapes or sizes?

Typically, these adhesive tapes will come in a sheet. Often, you will see the thermal tape in 1-inch x 1-inch squares. Some thermal tape squares will have rounded edges.

How can you remove thermal tape?

Like with most bonding agents, you are able to remove the adhesive tape. With a few basic household products, some dexterity, and patience, you can remove your 3M tape. Follow these simple steps:

  • Step 1: Delicately pick or chip off the conductive adhesive transfer tape with a plastic object that has a flat edge, to avoid scratching any hardware.
  • Step 2: Dab rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab and gently rub the area with the moist cotton swap to clean off any remaining 3M tape residue.
  • Step 3: Use a soft microfiber cloth or a clean coffee filter to remove the remaining amount of adhesive.
